Abstract Background: The primary objective of this prospective study was to measure the change from baseline in visual function – Best-Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) via the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) chart, contrast sensitivity, central 10 degree visual fields and retinalimaging (angiograms and photographs) at 6 months in subjects with atrophic (dry) age-relatedmacular degeneration treated with a targeted nutritional supplement. Methods: 37 mixed gender patients with a mean age of 76.3 +/- 7.8 years were enrolled at 5independent study sites and received standard of care with a novel formulation of a nutritional supplement. Results were compared to a placebo cohort constructed from the literature that wasmatched for inclusion and exclusion criteria. A paired t-test was used to test a null hypothesis anda two-sided alpha level of 0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. Results: 76.7% of subjects receiving the nutritional supplement demonstrated stabilization or improvement of BCVA at 6 months. Subjects gained an average of 0.0541 logMAR or one-half of a line of visual acuity (VA) over the 6-month period. There was a statistically significant improvement in VA from baseline with P = .045. The results provide strong evidence that the treatment being studied produces an improvement in VA.Conclusion: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Order AmeriSciences TOZAL for Macular Degeneration and Vision Support. Treatment with this unique nutritional supplement increased VA above the expected baseline decrease in the majority of patients in this population with dry macular degeneration. The results of the TOZAL study agree with the LAST and CARMIS studies and are predictive for positive visual acuity outcomes in the AREDS II trial. However, patients will likely require supplementation for longer than 6 months to effect changes in additional visual parameters.Francis E Cangemi*Fish oil in the treatment of dyslipidemia.

Fish oil in the treatment of dyslipidemia.Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida 33136, USA. rgoldber@med.miami.edu PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The recent availability of a concentrated prescription omega-3 fatty acid preparation provides physicians with an additional anti-dyslipidemic agent at a time when limitations of statin therapy in dyslipidemic high-risk patients are recognized. This review examines the evidence supporting the use of omega-3 fatty acid treatment in dyslipidemic states. RECENT FINDINGS: There is now considerable evidence that omega-3 fatty acid treatment at the prescription strength of 4 g/day effectively and safely lowers triglyceride levels and increases low-density lipoprotein size, as well as affecting high-density lipoprotein metabolism. Similar effects have been noted in patients treated with statins, and add-on prescription omega-3 fatty acid therapy significantly increases the proportion of statin-treated dyslipidemic patients reaching their non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol goals. In addition to past studies showing a cardioprotective effect of low-dose omega-3 fatty acid treatment against sudden death, a recent controlled clinical trial showed that 1.8 g of omega-3 fatty acid in statin-treated patients reduced major coronary events by 19% compared with statin plus placebo treatment. SUMMARY: Omega-3 fatty acid treatment should be considered in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia as well as in high-risk patients with an atherogenic lipoprotein phenotype. ------------------------------------------------------------------- I recommend AmeriSciences Omega Max for Dyslipidemia. Omega3 Fatty acids for cardioprotection.Address correspondence to James H. O'Keefe, MD, 4330 Wornall Rd, Ste 2000, Kansas City, MO 64111 (jhokeefe@cc-pc.com). The most compelling evidence for the cardiovascular benefit provided by omega-3 fatty acids comes from 3 large controlled trials of 32,000 participants randomized to receive omega-3 fatty acid supplements containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or to act as controls. These trials showed reductions in cardiovascular events of 19% to 45%. These findings suggest that intake of omega-3 fatty acids, whether from dietary sources or fish oil supplements, should be increased, especially in those with or at risk for coronary artery disease. Patients should consume both DHA and EPA. The target DHA and EPA consumption levels are about 1 g/d for those with known coronary artery disease and at least 500 mg/d for those without disease. Patients with hypertriglyceridemia benefit from treatment with 3 to 4 g/d of DHA and EPA, a dosage that lowers triglyceride levels by 20% to 50%. Although 2 meals of oily fish per week can provide 400 to 500 mg/d of DHA and EPA, secondary prevention patients and those with hypertriglyceridemia must use fish oil supplements if they are to reach 1 g/d and 3 to 4 g/d of DHA and EPA, respectively. Combination therapy with omega-3 fatty acids and a statin is a safe and effective way to improve lipid levels and cardiovascular prognosis beyond the benefits provided by statin therapy alone. Blood DHA and EPA levels could one day be used to identify patients with deficient levels and to individualize therapeutic recommendations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I recommend AmeriSciences Omega Max for Cardioprotection. Saturday, June 9. 2007Effect of Antioxidants and Fish Oil on Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)NEI Press ReleaseNATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTHNational Eye Institute Embargoed until Thursday, October 12, 2006 New Nationwide Study Will Evaluate Effect of Antioxidants and Fish Oil on Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)Nearly 100 Clinical Centers Are Now Seeking 4,000 Study Participants Ages 50 - 85 Who Have AMD The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces a nationwide study to see if a modified combination of vitamins, minerals, and fish oil can further slow the progression of vision loss from AMD, the leading cause of vision loss in the United States for people over age 60. This new study, called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), will build upon results from the earlier Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). The original study results were released five years ago today. The study found that high-dose antioxidant vitamins and minerals (vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, and copper), taken by mouth, reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD by 25 percent, and the risk of moderate vision loss by 19 percent. AREDS2 will refine the findings of the original study by adding lutein and zeaxanthin (plant-derived yellow pigments that accumulate in the macula, the small area responsible for central vision near the center of the retina) and the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA (derived from fish oils) to the study formulation. The main study objective is to determine if these nutrients will decrease a person's risk of progression to advanced AMD, which often leads to vision loss. Previous observational studies have suggested these nutrients may protect vision. "Vision loss from AMD is an important public health issue. This study may help us find a better way to treat this devastating disease," said Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D., director of the NIH. AMD damages the macula. As the disease progresses, it blurs the patient's central vision. AMD can take two forms, wet and dry. Wet AMD is caused by the abnormal growth of blood vessels under the macula. This leads to rapid loss of central vision. Wet AMD is considered to be advanced AMD and is more severe than the dry form. Dry AMD, the more common form, occurs when the light-sensitive cells in the macula slowly break down. Untreated dry AMD can progress into wet AMD. Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Eye Institute (NEI) at NIH, said, "Nearly two million Americans have vision loss from advanced AMD, and another seven million with AMD are at substantial risk for vision loss. In the AREDS study, we found a combination of vitamins and minerals that effectively slowed the progression of AMD for some people. Now, we will conduct this more precisely-targeted study to see if the new combination of nutrients can reduce AMD progression even further. This study may help people at high risk for advanced AMD maintain useful vision for a longer time." Emily Y. Chew, M.D., study chair and deputy director of the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Research at the NEI said, "The AREDS2 study is seeking 4,000 people between 50 and 85 years of age with AMD in both eyes, or advanced AMD in one eye. They must be available for yearly eye examinations for at least five years. Until we get the results from AREDS2, we encourage people with AMD to visit their eye care professional to see if they need to take the AREDS vitamin and mineral formulation. This alone could save more than 300,000 people from vision loss over the next five years." Sunday, May 6. 2007Tea drinkers may have lower skin cancer riskI thought you may be interested in reading this article about how EGCG can help prevent some skin cancers. Sultan H. Rahaman, M.D. Tea drinkers may have lower skin cancer riskFri May 4, 2:07 PM ET People who unwind with a cup of tea every night may have a lower risk of two common forms of skin cancer, new research suggests. In a study of nearly 2,200 adults, researchers found that tea drinkers had a lower risk of developing squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma, the two most common forms of skin cancer. Men and women who had ever been regular tea drinkers -- having one or more cups a day -- were 20 percent to 30 percent less likely to develop the cancers than those who didn't drink tea. The effect was even stronger among study participants who'd been tea fans for decades, as well as those who regularly had at least two cups a day, according to findings published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. However, the findings do not mean it's okay to bake in the sun as long as you have a cup of tea afterward. The researchers found no evidence that tea drinking lowered skin cancer risk in people who'd accumulated painful sunburns in the past. Nor did the study look at the relationship between tea drinking and malignant melanoma, the least common but most deadly form of skin cancer. Still, the findings support the theory that tea antioxidants may limit the damage UV radiation inflicts on the skin, according to the study authors, led by Dr. Judy R. Rees of Dartmouth Medical School in Lebanon, New Hampshire. In particular, a tea antioxidant known as EGCG has been shown to reduce burning on UV-exposed skin. The current findings are based on interviews with 770 New Hampshire residents with basal cell carcinoma, 696 with squamous cell carcinoma, and 715 cancer-free men and women the same age. Tea consumption was linked to a lower skin cancer risk, even with factors such as age, skin type and history of severe burns considered. However, tea drinkers who'd suffered multiple painful burns in the past did not have a lower risk of skin cancer. It's possible, the researchers explain, that the antioxidants in tea are enough to limit skin damage caused by moderate sun exposure, but not the "more extreme" effects of sun exposure, such as cancer-promoting damage to the DNA in skin cells. Wednesday, April 18. 2007Omega-3 fish oil can help children suffering with ADHD symptoms.Omega-3 fish oil can help children suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, a new study suggests. Results from "the largest, clinical-based omega-3 and omega-6 trial of its kind" bolstered views that fatty acids relieve aspects of the condition. The tests were undertaken by the University of South Australia and an Australian government research body. They involved 132 children aged between seven and 12 with ADHD symptoms and the active fatty acid used was Equazen's eye q supplement. For 15 weeks, during the first half of the test, children were split into three groups. One took eye q, the second took eye q and a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement, while the third took placebo palm oil capsules. All children were then given eye q and the multivitamins/minerals. At the end of the 30-week-long trial, almost half of the children taking eye q for the whole study saw "significant" reductions in ADHD symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, researchers said. After the placebo group switched to the combined oil supplement for 15 weeks, they showed significant improvements in parent behaviour ratings and attention span. The original eye q group continued to show improvements after an additional 15 weeks of taking the combined oil supplement in cognitive problems, inattention, restlessness, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Philip Calder, professor of nutritional immunology at the University of Southampton added: "The results of this latest trial add to the growing body of evidence showing that children with attention problems can benefit from increased intake of certain fatty acids." The new trial results are published in this month's Journal of Developmental and Behavioural Paediatrics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get Pharmaceutical Quality AmeriSciences Omega Max: www.AmeriSciencesProducts.com http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/society/health/omega3+boost+for+adhd+sufferers/437767

Tuesday, March 27. 2007Science Based Supplementation: A Win for Doctors & PatientsScience Based Supplementation: A Win for Doctors & Patients About 5 years ago I realized that my patients were buying large quantities of supplements and were constantly asking for advice about taking them. I believe in supplementation but I was unsure what to advise, because 95% of supplements on the market are not of pharmaceutical quality.
I decided to implement a science based pharmaceutical quality wellness program (AmeriSciences Science Based Nutrition) into my practice since June 2002. It was a simple turnkey program to implement. Lots of patient brochures, posters, fact sheets and DVD. No Selling! My patients love the quality of the supplements and they really work. It is not a panacea but they are losing weight faster when combined with adequate diet and exercise, relieving osteoarthritis pain, lowering cholesterol, increasing energy levels and sleeping better, etc.. I use several of them myself, so I can attest to the fact that they work and are safe.Another benefit: The program has added very significant cash income to my practice without additional employees, overhead expenses or time. So, I am promoting Wellness and Prevention in a very scientific and ethical manner, while adding income to my practice without seeing more patients or increasing medical liability. What was considered the most highly paid profession is today in a losing battle where time and money are scarce. Physicians are often faced with the need to sacrifice quality time with patients in order to increase volume and cash flow. This State-of-the-Art program allows you to effectively manage many symptoms and diseases with a fully integrated compliment to your traditional medical therapies. Why allow the pharmaceutical companies to monopolize the booming Wellness and Prevention industry. We are best suited to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients with science based wellness and prevention. You will not fully understand how this works unless you evaluate!
